A tough times, happy story.
February 16th, 2009 Posted in DenverLast week I was standing in line at the local super market, when I saw something that–in a down economy– put a huge smile on my face. Two people ahead of me were a woman and her 4 year oldish daughter who were checking out. The mom got to a point where she looked at the register and immediately knew that she wasn’t going to be able to afford all of the items they still had on the belt. The mom, probably in her mid-twenties, asked the cashier to take back the kid cereal, some Popsicles, chocolate milk and waffles. Things they could go without. The daughter started to cry and proceeded to throw a tiny tantrum, not understanding why she wouldn’t have those items when she got home. The mother simply responded “Mommy doesn’t have enough money for them.”
Money is tight everywhere– I know that I’m not the only one who’s found myself going without a new car, new wardrobe and even brand name groceries (why, when the generic tastes the same?) just to save money.
The daughter continued to cry, when I saw the man directly in front of me pull out his wallet. He told the cashier to run the items and he’d pay the difference.
It was nearly $18. The mom started to cry with appreciation, which in turn, got me tearing up.
I think we forget some times how much we have, when we feel like we don’t have anything at all.
It just reminded me, even when I might be hurting, I can always guarantee someone is worse off…
