Friendly Colorado
February 17th, 2009 Posted in DenverI was thinking about my last blog last night and how it pertained to the people of Colorado.
I’ve lived here nearly a year, having come from New York and prior to that, Wisconsin. When I decided to move, I had picked five places in the United States that inspired me…five places I could see myself happiest. San Diego, Seattle, Denver, Portland and Cincinnati (I know, it just looked nice.) I first checked out Cincinnati, and discovered that the city was nice– but not home. My 2nd destination was Denver. Before the plane even made a landing, I was in love and knew this was where I was meant to be.
About five months later I finally made my move and again I found myself at the grocery store. When it was my turn at the check out, the cashier started talking to me, not as if it were her job, but more-so in the sense that she wanted to. The guy behind me joined in and both of them welcomed me to their state and my new home. I hadn’t had such hospitality in five years.
The people of Colorado are a different breed. A lot of us are transplants and a lot of us are not, it’s almost a 50/50 ratio… and most people that I meet who were raised in Colorado but moved to find something “better” always find themselves coming back having missed the Rookies, the fresh air and the people.
Maybe it has to do with 300 days of sun a year, or our winter days in summer and summer days in winter… How could that not make you laugh a little, and appreciate where you live a lot more? Maybe it’s just something in the oxygen that makes us appreciate each other more as human beings and the earth more like temple?
Whatever it is, the people and the all-together beauty of this place are what keep me here. What keeps you?
